Robert Guédiguian

• French director and producer, born in Marseille in 1953.
  
  A militant filmmaker, in his work Robert Guédiguian celebrates the city of Marseille, where he grew up, and scrutinises the history of those he calls, like Victor Hugo, “pauvres gens” (“poor people”). His first feature films in the 1980s – Rouge midi, Last Summer, and Til Death Do Us Part – were hailed by the critics. The general public discovered him with Marius and Jeannette, which won the Louis Delluc Prize and was presented in competition in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 1997. The twenty or so films he has directed include Marie-Jo and Her Two Lovers (2002), The Last Mitterrand (2004), Le Voyage en Arménie en forme de quête des origines (2007), Lady Jane (2008), The Army of Crime (2009), The Snows of Kilimanjaro (2011), and Don't Tell Me the Boy Was Mad (2014). His film The Villa was a huge critical and public success. He was also a member of the Jury at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
