Valérie Lemercier
French actress and director born in 1964 in Dieppe.
Following theatre studies at the Conservatoire de Rouen, Valérie Lemercier made a name for herself with the Palace series by Jean-Michel Ribes in 1988, soon followed by her first solo stage appearance, which confirmed her talents as an author and comic actress. Her role in Louis Malle’s May Fools inaugurated her onscreen career, which continued with a vast array of filmmakers (Jean-Marie Poiré, Claire Denis, Alain Chabat, Danièle Thompson, Laurent Tirard, etc.). With The Visitors or Little Nicholas, she contributed to the success of mainstream comedies, to which she lent her letters of nobility. In 1997, she passed behind the camera with Quadrille (1997), adapted from Sacha Guitry’s play. A polyvalent artist, she subsequently undertook parallel careers as an actor, singer and director. We notably owe Le Derrière (1999) and Palais Royal! (2007) to her talents, or more recently, Aline (2020), a tribute to singer Céline Dion as sincere as it is audacious, which earned her the César for Best Actress in 2021.
