Le soir de Noël, dans une riche demeure de la province suédoise, la famille Ekdahl se retrouve autour de la matriarche Helena. Ancienne actrice, elle a transmis le goût du théâtre à son fils Oscar, heureux propriétaire d’un théâtre avec sa femme Emilie, ainsi qu’à ses petits-enfants, Fanny et Alexandre. C’est d’ailleurs en répétant « Hamlet », qu’Oscar meurt peu après les festivités. Après le drame, Emilie accepte la demande en mariage de l’austère évêque Vergérus qui transforme la bonne humeur familiale en un autoritarisme rigide. Plus que jamais, Alexandre et Fanny tentent alors de brouiller les frontières entre fiction et réalité en cherchant refuge dans le pouvoir salvateur de l’imagination…
Notes: Fanny et Alexandre fût le dernier film réalisé par Ingmar Bergman, qui ne réalisa ensuite que des téléfilms. Au cinéma le film fût réduit pour tenir sur trois heures tandis que le film intégral fût diffusé à la télévision.
