Well before "Chinese Puzzle", Cédric Klapisch had already shot in the Big Apple for his first film, a city that he knew well since he once frequented New York University. It is a unique film that is unlike any of the following works in his filmography, and even less like a touristic postcard, thanks to his radical and minimalist choices. On the contrary, here the filmmaker combined Kafkaesque fable, metaphysical anxiety, and ephemeral romance, in a very personal style. A true classic of the 1980s and winner of the Special Jury Prize at Clermont-Ferrand.
