Dixon Steele, un scénariste hollywoodien en panne d’inspiration et en proie à des accès de violence, se retrouve suspecté du meurtre d’une jeune serveuse. L’alibi fournit par sa voisine, la belle Laurel Gray permet de le disculper. Très vite, la jeune femme se révèle être tout ce que Dixon attendait et grâce à la relation qu’il entame avec elle le scénariste retrouve son souffle artistique. Mais sous la pression de la police, soupçonneuse quant à la relation du suspect et du témoin, Dixon renoue avec ses comportements violents. Laurel commence elle aussi à douter de l’innocence de son amant.
