En avril 1945, l’Armée rouge fait reculer la Wehrmacht. Gregor Hecker, un jeune lieutenant d’origine allemande, se retrouve à la charge d’une petite ville qu’il cherche à pacifier. De retour dans sa patrie devenue étrangère, le jeune homme va vite faire face à de nombreux questionnements identitaires.
