Alice Rohrwacher
Italian director, born in Fiesole (Tuscany) in 1981.
Alice Rohrwacher, a leading light of the young Italian cinema, grew up on a beekeeping farm in Umbria, with an Italian mother, German father, and her older sister, the actor Alba Rohrwacher. From this early configuration, she has retained her attachment to rurality and multiculturalism, as well as a strong bond with her sister, her onscreen accomplice. After studying literature in Turin, she entered the film world through collective documentaries – a direction that she has pursued: Futura, the portrait of Italian youth, codirected with Pietro Marcello and Francesco Munzi was presented at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2021. Her notable fictions – Corpo Celeste (Directors’ Fortnight 2011), The Wonders (Grand Prize – Cannes 2014), Happy as Lazzaro (Best Screenplay – Cannes 2018) – are contemporary fables, full of teenagers going through changes, ancestral injustices, and a mythological bestiary. Her cinema, shot in non-digital film, at once incisive and sensitive, mystical and political, brings our collective memory bank up to date.
