En 1887 à San Francisco, James J. Corbett n’est pas exactement ce que l’on pourrait appeler un « gentleman ». Modeste employé de banque, il n’a pas sa langue dans sa poche et n’est pas familier des bonnes manières. Celui qu’on surnomme Jim a une passion pour un sport longtemps réservé au milieu huppé : la boxe. A force de persévérance, Jim parvient à intégrer le club Olympique. Il y fait la rencontre de Victoria, aussi belle que hautaine. Celle-ci, décidée à mettre un terme à l’attitude prétentieuse du jeune homme, lui organise un combat sur le ring avec un ex-champion. Contre toute attente, Jim remporte la victoire. C’est le début d’une ascension autant sportive que sociale.
Note : Gentleman Jim est inspiré de la vie du boxeur James J.Corbett.
