Irene Girard is an ambassador&#x27;s wife and used to living in luxury. After the dramatic death of her son, she feels guilty of having neglected him and feels compelled to help people in need who cross her path. One day she offers shelter to a man who is evading justice, and she ends being arrested herself. Her husband, for the sake of social propriety, arranges for a doctor to declare her insane. Irene escapes one prison to enter another, and to reflect on what sort of society she lives in.

In 1944, in Milan, the Germans ask small-time swindler Bertone to pretend to be General Della Rovere, a patriotic hero who has just been killed so they can spy on the resistance fighters. Bertone is then immediately contacted by Bianchelli who, however, is tortured and dies before being able to convey his message. Bertone, overwhelmed by what has just happened, realizes his mistake, refuses to collaborate with the Germans and chooses to die with the other condemned prisoners. Gold Lion, Venice Festival, 1959.

4 short films by a quartet of directors. Rosselini&#x27;s &#x27;Chastity&#x27; (&#x27;Illibatezza&#x27;) deals with an attractive air hostess who receives the unwelcome attentions of a middle aged American. Godard&#x27;s &#x27;New World&#x27; (&#x27;Il Nuovo Mondo&#x27;) illustrates a post-apocalyptic world the same as the pre-apocalyptic one, but for an enigmatic change in attitude in most people, including the central character&#x27;s girlfriend. Pasolini&#x27;s &#x27;Curd Cheese&#x27; (&#x27;La Ricotta&#x27;), a lavish film about the life of Jesus Christ is being made in a poor area. The people subject themselves to various indignities in the name of moviemaking (and to get some food). The central character&#x27;s hoisted up on a cross for filming, and dies there. Finally, Gregoretti&#x27;s &#x27;Free Range Chicken&#x27; (&#x27;Il Pollo Ruspante&#x27;) in which a materialist family inadvertently shows the cynical, metallic-voiced doctrine of a top sales theorist

Once a year the fair comes for one day to the little town &#x27;Sainte-Severe-sur-Indre&#x27;. All inhabitants are scoffing at Francois, the postman, what he seems not to recognize. The rising of the flagstaff under his direction nearly leads into a catastrophy - but everybody tells him, how important his work is. Sneering up Francois continues in the evening of the festive day. Made drunk, some &#x27;friends&#x27; persuade him to watch a short-movie in a tent. This film is a stunt-show, covered as &#x27;The modern delivery-techniques of the US-post. Francois takes it serious, not recognizing being teased. Next day, after getting sober in a goods wagon, he reorganizes his own delivery-methods. He has not the equipment, as his ideals in the short-movie have, but using only his bicycle, he makes good, funny progresses.
