Kikuji is the scion of an Osaka merchant family whose traditional power is matrilineal. Driven to a life of dissipation - his mistresses also fail to produce daughters - in the end he is just too tired to care. The film presages Ichikawa&#39;s The Makioka Sisters in its World War II nostalgia and visual sophistication.

In Hungary, the national movement led by Kossuth has been crushed and the Austrian hegemony re-established, but partisans carry on with violent actions. In order to root out the guerilla, the army rounds up suspects and jails them in an isolated fort. The authorities do not have the identity of the guerilla leaders, who are supposed to be present among the prisoners. However, they know enough about some of the suspects to apply perfidious forms of coercion effectively.

In a French village, Manou is an Italian logger, virile, with a broad laugh. He can&#x27;t say no to women&#x27;s sexual invitations, and jealous villagers blame him for recent fires and a flood. He is innocent; the culprit is &quot;Mademoiselle,&quot; town schoolmarm, a recent arrival admired by all, but sexually repressed and obsessed with Manou. She sets the first fire accidentally and throbs watching a shirtless Manou perform heroics. Subsequent catastrophes are no accident and express her mad passion for him. Also, after befriending Manou&#x27;s son, she turns on the lad, making him miserable and raising his suspicions. Her designs, Manou&#x27;s frank innocence, and the town&#x27;s xenophobia mix explosively.

A factory manager in rural Czechoslovakia bargains with the army to send men to the area, to boost the morale of his young female workers, deprived of male company since the local boys have been conscripted. The army sends reservists, mostly married middle-aged men - and the local beauty Andula, spurns those bold enough to try to win her, for the jazz pianist, newly come from Prague to perform. Staying the night with him causes a lecture on a young woman&#x27;s honor at her hostel so she throws over her other suitors and makes her way to Prague to find the young man. Diego is one of the chiefs of the spanish Communist Party. He is travelling back to Paris (where he lives) from a mission in Madrid. He is arrested at the border for an identity check but manages to go free thanks to Nadine, the daughter of the man whose passport is used by him. When he arrives in Paris, he starts searching one of his comrades, Juan, to prevent him from going to Madrid where he could be arrested by Franco&#x27;s police.
