Au sortir de la guerre, l’armée américaine se retire d’un village près de Leipzig, laissant place aux Russes qui vont bientôt occuper la zone. Joschi et Isa, deux jeunes habitants du village, recherchent un coffret de valeur caché par les nazis. Cherchant à fuir les Russes, ils se trouvent confrontés au refus des Américains de leur venir en aide.
