Emmanuelle Bercot
A French director, scriptwriter, and actress, born in Paris in 1967.
Emmanuelle Bercot grew up in Paris in a building which also contained Le Grand Pavois cinema. Her desire to explore bodies in space, through dance and theatre, led her to enter the Fémis. Early on, with Isild Le Besco, from La Puce (1998) to Backstage (2008), she filmed teenagers instinctively. Since Student Services (2009), the portrait of a precarious student prostitute, her political eye has developed, combining life stories with investigations into institutions: the “Polisse” in Maïwenn’s film, which she co-wrote in 2011; justice in Standing Tall (opening at Cannes in 2015); or health in 150 Milligrams (2016). Her cinema is reinvented by its actors, including Catherine Deneuve, for whom she composed the road trip On My Way (2013) and the melodrama De son vivant (2021). A multi-faceted artist, Bercot is also an acclaimed actress and received the award for Best Actress at Cannes in 2015 for Maïwenn’s My King. In 2022, she directed several episodes for the second season of the TV series En thérapie.
