Sean Baker
American director, born in New Jersey in 1971.
After studying film at New York University, Sean Baker directed his first film, Four Letter Words (2000), a humorous look at American youth. A figure of independent cinema, he wrote, directed and edited his first low-budget features in a typical DIY aesthetic. Interested in marginal figures, he made several portraits of immigrants and sex workers. He achieved international success with Tangerine (2015) — filmed entirely with 3 iPhones — which won the Jury Prize at the Deauville Film Festival. In 2017, The Florida Project — starring Willem Dafoe — made the American Film Institute's “10 Films of the Year” list. Red Rocket was selected for competition at Cannes in 2021, before Anora was awarded the Palme d'Or in 2024.
