Bertrand Blier

• French director born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1939.

  The son of actor Bernard Blier, Bertrand Blier started out as an assistant director to Georges Lautner. In 1963, he directed the fictional documentary Hitler – Never Heard of Him. As a scriptwriter, in 1973 he adapted his first novel, Les Valseuses [Going Places], for cinema, which was a smash hit and introduced Gérard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere, and Miou-Miou to audiences. He presented another male duo in Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (1978), which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Buffet froid (1979), in which he directed Bernard Blier, Beau-père (1981), and Tenue de soirée (1986) were to follow. In 1989, Too Beautiful for You won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as five Césars, including Best Director. In 1999, he brought together the greatest contemporary French actors in Actors, followed by The Clink of Ice (2010) and Heavy Duty (2019).
