Wim Wenders

• German director, producer, and photographer, born in Düsseldorf in 1945.

  After a year spent in Paris discovering French cinema, Wim Wenders enrolled in the Munich University of Television and Film and there made his first feature film. He then adapted Peter Handke’s Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter [The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick] (1972), which began his collaboration with that writer. Wenders went on to complete a road movie trilogy, which brought together his favourite themes with Alice in den Städten [Alice in the Cities] (1974), Falsche Bewegung [The Wrong Move] (1975) and Im Lauf der Zeit [Kings of the Road] (1976). The climax came with Paris, Texas, winner of the Golden Palm in 1984 and Der Himmel über Berlin [Wings of Desire] (1987). Wim Wenders is also author of several documentary films, including Pina (2011), a 3D film about the choreographer Pina Bausch, and The Salt of the Earth (2014), which retraces the life of photographer Sebastião Salgado. Himself a photographer, Wenders regularly exhibits his work worldwide.
