Leos Carax discovered cinema – his “island” – at the age of sixteen.
While studying under Serge Daney and Serge Toubiana at university, they introduced him to Cahiers du cinéma. At the age of nineteen, he directed his first short film, Strangulation Blues, soon followed by his first feature, Boy Meets Girl, starring Denis Lavant, his future favourite actor. After Mauvais sang [aka The Night Is Young], he reunited Denis Lavant and Juliette Binoche in The Lovers on the Bridge (1991). Then came Pola X (1999) – an adaptation of H. Melville’s novel Pierre; or, The Ambiguities – that he also produced as a director’s cut for ARTE. After first staging the character of Monsieur Merde in one of the sequences of the film Tokyo!, the character returned in Holy Motors, one of the key films of the 2012 Cannes competition.
