Paris 1887, the elderly Countess de Bonaf&eacute; lives with her son and grand-daughter, Douce, in a town house. Douce loves Fabien, the steward, but discovers that he is having an affair with her governess, Irene. But the Count is in love with Irene, and asks her to marry him. Douce elopes with the steward but the dream of love soon vanishes. After the young woman dies in a fire, Fabien and Irene are thrown out of the house.

Jock, a well-to-do fishmonger, brings a woman called Odette from Saint-Brieuc to the small port in Brittany where he lives. On the eve of her 16th birthday, Sylvie&#x27;s father needs cash to stay in his castle so he sells Sylvie&#x27;s favorite thing, a painting of Alain, the lover of Sylvie&#x27;s grandmother, killed in a duel. The Rules of the Game

A travelogue of Valparaiso, Chile, a city built on steep hills. Life is a constant struggle against geography. Neighbourhoods are reached by series of ramps, staircases, and funicular railway elevators. The poorest residents on the hilltops have trouble obtaining water for drinking and washing. There are community dances, a travelling circus, a race course. Boys feed the harbour sealions; a fashionable woman walks her penguin. The ever-present onshore breeze provides fresh air and an ideal environment for kite-flying. The film&#x27;s second half is in colour, making the switch with the tale of the city&#x27;s bloody pirate past.
