Toni, an immigrant worker, becomes his landlady's lover and marries her. Except he is not in love with Marie but with Josepha who has been made to marry a cruel foreman. Josepha's husband catches her stealing his money that she planned to use to run away, and she kills him. When Toni finds out about the murder, he wants to help the young woman. As he is trying to hide the body, he is shot and killed by a forest ranger while of her own accord Josepha gives herself up to the police.
