Bertrand Tavernier
French director, born in Lyon in 1941.
After moving to Paris after the war, Bertrand Tavernier cofounded the film club Nickel Odéon and contributed to various magazines, particularly Positif and Les Cahiers du Cinéma. He worked as a press agent for the producer Georges de Beauregard, then as an independent. Passionate about American cinema, he published a collection of interviews and several notable books on the subject (Amis Américains: Entretiens avec les Grands Auteurs d'Hollywood and 50 Ans de Cinéma Américain). His first feature film, The Clockmaker, received the Silver Bear in Berlin in 1974. A rich œuvre of over twenty-five feature films of widely varying genres was to follow: period films (Let Joy Reign Supreme, 'Round Midnight, Life and Nothing But), detective films (L.627, Fresh Bait) or more intimist-style films (A Sunday in the Country, Daddy Nostalgia). His films have been awarded many prizes in France and abroad.
