Payal Kapadia
Indian director born in 1986 in Mumbai.
Payal Kapadia developed an early interest in cinema, particularly experimental film, which she discovered at Mumbai festivals. While studying at the Film and Television Institute of India, she also experienced her first political commitments. The latter fueled her first feature film, A Night Without Knowing, for which she received the Golden Eye at Cannes in 2021, as well as a Special Mention from the Jury at the Créteil Women's Film Festival. Somewhere between documentary and fiction, the film takes the free paths of form to question the state of the world, playing on the ambiguities of images at the time of post-truth. She confirms this use of hybridization in All We Imagine as Light — Grand Prix 2024 at Cannes: through the stories of three women, she does a portrait of contemporary India permeated by documentary and impressionistic dimensions.
