Raymond Depardon
French director and photographer, born in Villefranche-sur-Saône in 1942.
Raymond Depardon, filmmaker and photographer, uses still and moving images in service to his unique style. He is the cofounder of the press agency Gamma, which he left in 1979 to become a member of the Magnum photo agency. He directed his first documentary film on the electoral campaign of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing in 1974, but broadcast of the film was prohibited for nearly 30 years. Fictions and documentaries were to follow, providing a wonderful X-ray of society, in which he candidly deals with the press, photographer-reporters, justice, psychiatry, Africa, the city, and farmers. In 2008, Modern Life obtained the Prix Louis Delluc. His latest film to date, Journal de France, co-directed with Claudine Nougaret, was presented out of competition at Cannes in 2012.
