Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Thai director born in 1970 in Bangkok.
After graduating in architecture at Khon Kaen University, Apichatpong Weerasethakul went on to study fine arts and filmmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Back in Thailand, he founded his production company, Kick the Machine, and made his first feature film, Mysterious Object at Noon, a conceptual documentary. His next film, Blissfully Yours, was a critical success and won The Prize Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002. This film is the first part of a trilogy that follows up with Tropical Malady and Syndromes of a Century. In 2010, he won the Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or for his movie Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. In 2021, Memoria, shot in Colombia with Tilda Swinton, won a Jury Prize ex-aequo in the official competition at Cannes. Apichatpong Weerasethakul is also recognised as a major international visual artist. He has mounted exhibitions and installations in many countries since 1998.
