Le chef d’œuvre de René Clément, film réaliste exaltant l’héroïsme des hommes du rail durant l’occupation allemande, est à l’origine un film commandé dans l’immédiat après-guerre par le Comité de libération du cinéma français, la SNCF et le Service cinématographique des armées. Il dépassera toutefois son statut d’œuvre de commande en remportant le Grand Prix du tout premier Festival de Cannes en 1946 et en recevant un immense succès populaire.
Le film a été remasterisé et restauré en 2010 par l'Institut National de l'Audiovisuel.
