Radu Jude
Radu Jude is one of the leading lights of contemporary Romanian cinema. After graduating in film directing from the Faculty of Media Studies at the University of Bucharest, he started out as assistant director on the films of Costa-Gavras, Radu Muntean, and Cristi Puiu. Already renowned for his short films, including The Tube with a Hat (Best Short Film at Sundance, 2006), he acquired international fame with his feature films, notably The Happiest Girl in the World (CICAE Prize at the Berlinale, 2009) and I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians (Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, 2018). His work, which also contains several documentary treatises, explores the sudden emergence of the past within the present, and denounces the vanity of our contemporary societies, often with a satirical tone. His latest fiction, Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, won the Golden Bear at the 2021 Berlinale.
