John Cameron Mitchell
American writer, director, and actor, born in 1963 in El Paso (USA).
John Cameron Mitchell began acting in theater, film and television. In 1998 he wrote a rock musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, with a genderqueer rock singer as a protagonist. Mitchell adapted it for film in 2001, for which he received the Best Director Award at the Sundance Film Festival and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. He then questioned the representation of naturalistic sexuality in film and made Shortbus (2006) a collective project with many non-professional actors. In 2010, he adapted a play by David Lindsay-Abaire, Rabbit Hole, starring Nicole Kidman, the film addresses the loss of a child. Pursuing a free exploration of genres, he released in 2018 a Sci-Fi punk comedy, How to Talk to Girls at Party starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning; created two fictional podcast series (Anthem: Homunculus starring Glenn Close and Laurie Anderson, and Cancellation Island starring Holly Hunter) as well as two albums (New American Dream and Anthem: Homunculus). Concurrently, he tours with his band and pursues his acting career (Girls, Shrill, The Good Fight. Joe Vs. Carole, City on Fire and The Sandman).
