Xavier Dolan
Director and actor born in 1989 in Montreal.
Having started his acting career as a child, Xavier Dolan passed behind the camera at a very young age. His first feature film, I Killed My Mother, caused a sensation and garnered several awards at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2009. Dolan is uncompromising in his exploration of the torments of love and affective relationships, as is the case in Heartbeats (2010) and Matthias and Maxime (2019). From Laurence Anyways (2012), a monumental portrait of a trans woman, to Mommy (2014), his films give feminine or queer characters a central role. His cinema is raw and contrasting, made up of bright and saturated colours, playing on framing, and citing pop and literary references. He has also made music videos (“Hello”, Adèle), as well as the miniseries The Night Logan Woke Up (2022). Playing himself in his films, he has also appeared in Xavier Giannoli’s Lost Illusions and Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased. He also played Adrian Mellon in It Chapter Two by Andrés Muschietti.
