Arnaud Desplechin
French director, born in Roubaix in 1960.
After studying at the University of Paris III, Arnaud Desplechin attended the IDHEC in 1980. He then worked as a director of photography, notably on short films by Eric Rochant. In 1991, he made a sensational entrance onto the French film scene by directing, several months apart, La Vie des Morts (Prix Jean Vigo 1991) and The Sentinel, in competition at Cannes in 1992. He then made My Sex Life... or How I Got into an Argument and Esther Kahn, his first film in English. He received the Prix Louis Delluc in 2004 for Kings and Queen, a huge success with critics and audiences alike. In 2012, he directed his first film in the United States, Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian, based on the book by ethno-psychoanalyst Georges Devereux. Since Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse (Three Memories of My Youth), winner of the César for Best Director in 2016, Desplechin's films have been shown regularly at Cannes, with Roubaix, une lumière (2019) and Frères et Sœurs (Brothers and Sisters) (2022) competing for the Palme d'Or. In 2022, he directed several episodes for the second season of the TV series En thérapie.
